"DIAPLASIS" Medical Rehabilitation Hospital in Kalamata Peloponnese

DIAPLASIS Medical Rehabilitation Hospital located in Kalamata-Messinia-Peloponnese, is a fully qualified rehabilitation clinic for people with physical disabilities and is unique in Greece. It was created to essentially and effectively address problems that are faced by patients because of a serious illness or injury following their hospital discharge. Problems that are not only associated with the patient's complete recovery, but also with his/her everyday life and his/her way of life that has now changed.

Daily and obvious things like eating, toilet use, personal cleanliness and so many others, become insurmountable difficulties for the patient and relatives and the presence of a doctor is often essential. At this stage the patient requires ongoing physiotherapy, exercise, speech therapy, occupational therapy, urinary catheter management, personal hygiene, psychological support, special diet, i.e. comprehensive rehabilitation which unfortunately is non-existent in our country. Diaplasi Medical Rehabilitation Hospital comes to fill this significant void in the patient's rehabilitation, which aims at improving their quality of life and returning them to as much of a normal life as possible. DIAPLASIS undertakes the care of patients with disorders that affect the individual's mobility and functionality. After conservative or surgical treatment in hospitals, they are transferred for rehabilitation either as inpatients, or as outpatients who visit us for their daily treatment. The Hospital's experienced medical-scientific and nursing personnel assesses the patients and prepares an individualized rehabilitation program aimed at self-carehttp://www.trigilidas.com/administrator/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&cid=179, ensuring quality of life and enhancing a good mental state. It has 107 ultra modern rehabilitation beds and an independent Step Down Unit with 10 high standard beds. The hospital is affiliated with E.O.P.Y.Y. and other health care providers providing a high level of care that is needed by patients.

Services
In order to be able to provide Scandinavian type rehabilitation services with European specifications, DIAPALSIS offer sophisticated technological equipment, qualified personnel that undergoes continuous training and the most essential, love and care to their patients. The center caters both inpatients and outpatients.

Department of Rehabilitation Robotics
It constitutes the most comprehensive and advanced rehabilitation robotic department in Greece. Lokomat The LOKOMAT Robotic system is a gait therapy device with robotic gait orthosis that comprises of a support system at the hips and two robotic lower extremities that are individually adapted to each lower extremity. It works in conjunction with a special treadmill and a body weight support system. The LOKOMAT system is digitally controlled via a computer. Treatment with LOKOMAT is system based on long-term investigations conducted by university clinics with the help of IT specialists, engineers and electrophysiologists and is today in most modern rehabilitation therapy. With the support of the LOKOMAT, patient learn to walk again by using two therapeutic methods ( repetition and targeted training ). This targeted form of treatment has been established to rehabilitate a wide range of neuromuscular disorders and spinal cord injuries. So the patient walks with a normal gait right away, thus minimizing the rehabilitation time. Patients suffering from the following conditions can take advantage of treatment with the LOKOMAT:

  • Spinal Injury
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Cerebral Palsy

Erigo
The ERIGO device is a robotic platform that fully controls leg motion mechanism using special computers. It supports and facilitates the mobilization of bedridden patients, by contributing to the prevention of secondary complications, which are caused by a prolonged period of immobility (e.g. thrombophlebitis, orthostatic hypotension, stiff lower extremities, etc.). ERIGO allows patients to come into a vertical position (90 Degrees), while the lower extremities move in a normal cyclic movement operated with electronically regulated resistance via a touchscreen. Under different circumstances with Erigo training that is conducted using a conventional non-robotic tilt table is a standard treatment that does not protect the patient from secondary complications in the early mobilization phase of neurological patients (sensorimotor injury). Patients suffering from the following conditions can take advantage of treatment with ERIGO for their early mobilization :

  • Stroke
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Spinal Injury
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Traumatic Brain Injury

Department of Therapeutic Riding
Therapeutic riding is one of the most effective methods of retraining-Rehabilitation for people who have neurological and sensory disorders with motor or cognitive deficits. The horse gives us both stimuli through its body heat and its rhythmic movement, which resembles the sequence of human motion during walking. At the same time, horse-back riding helps maintain range of motion of the hip joints. It is a known fact that increased muscle tone leads to muscle shortening on the one hand and joint deformation on the other. With systematic intervention of riding therapy we achieve increased range of motion of the joint, reduced spasticity and relaxation of the muscular system. We prevent contractures and keep bilateral joints in good condition. The horse's normal patterns of movement reach the brain immediately, which is essential in Rehabilitation, thus forcing the patient to respond.

Therapeutic effects

  • Normalization of muscle tone
  • Improves head, trunk and pelvic control
  • Inhibits abnormal movement patterns and promote normal patterns
  • Improves balance
  • Improves motor coordination
  • Improves cardiorespiratory function and endurance

In spite of everything, horse-riding therapy is a powerful incentive because the patient is taken out a standard treatment environment. Therapeutic riding programs are implemented at our center on selected patient groups in collaboration with our qualified therapists at the respective riding club in the area.

Department of Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy refers to the application of water as a means of rehabilitation. At Diaplasis Medical Rehabilitation Hospital, the purpose of the hydrotherapy program is to configure personalized sessions, according to the needs of each patient, for their physical and psychological improvement. The aim of this program, which fully exploits the physical properties of water, i.e. buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure and resistance, is the patient's complete rehabilitation. The Department of Hydrotherapy at Diaplasis Medical Rehabilitation Hospital, is staffed by highly trained hydrotherapists, who implement the appropriate rehabilitation programs under the doctors' guidance. At Diaplasis, the treatments take place in a modern, aboveground, fully-equipped heated pool, which meets the latest specifications, and includes supporting devices, hydro-gymnastic equipment, hydro-treadmill, hydro massage system and reverse swimming. Electronic lifters - hoists are used for the patients' easy access and the safe entry of patients with disabilities, into the pool. Monitoring windows help the therapists to monitor the patients' movements in the water, to provide a complete picture and be given the correct feedback. The rehabilitation programs are executed in three depth levels, depending on the therapeutic targets. The Department of Hydrotherapy at Diaplasis is able, with absolute specialization, to deal with a wide range of disorders:

  • Neurological disorders– such as:
    • Cerebrovascular accidents

With the personalized kinesiotherapy program that is implemented in the therapeutic pool at "Diaplasis", the patient uses his/her capabilities and abilities in the water. Thanks to buoyancy, one of the basic water properties, body weight does not need to be supported by the legs. Thus, the movements of the upper and lower extremities and the spine are done with greater and ease and with more freedom. The tranquility of the water, coupled with the area's appropriate surroundings, ensures pleasant cooperation between the patient and the hydrotherapist, which is the key to successful rehabilitation. By immersing the patient in warm water of the therapeutic pool at "Diaplasis" and in combination with the other characteristic water properties, the following are achieved:

  • Reduced sensitivity to pain.
  • Promotion of muscle relaxation.
  • Decrease of muscle spasm.
  • Facilitate the movement of the joint, improving the orbit of stiff joints.
  • Muscular strength and endurance are increased.
  • The body's kinesthesis and balance, neuromuscular assembly and stability of the trunk are improved.
  • The respiratory muscles are improved.
  • The peripheral and lymphatic circulation is improved, thus helping to absorb swellings and hematomas.

Department of Occupational Therapy
The Department of Occupational Therapy at Diaplasis Medical Rehabilitation Hospital provides its services to adults with neurological and orthopedic health problems. Occupational therapy aims at the individual being able to achieve the maximum level of function and independence in all aspects of life and to resume the social roles that he/she had before the illness or disability, through targeted activities. To achieve this, the Department:

  • applies self-care retraining programs
  • for the autonomous execution of daily living activities, the appropriate aids are proposed per circumstance and the patients are trained to use them
  • programs are implemented to improve cognitive, sensory and motor skills (development of upper extremity skills)

Special Equipment
The Occupational Therapy department is equipped with:

  • ROBOTIC device for retraining the upper extremities. The Armeo Spring is the most advanced robotic device for the functional rehabilitation of the upper extremities. To Armeo is aimed for patients, who have lost function or have impaired functionality of their upper extremities, because of a neurological or orthopedic injury. It is a robotic orthotic device for the arm that provides adjustable upper extremity weight support and in combination with visual stimuli from a computer (biofeedback), in a pleasant environment, it inspires and motivates the patient to perform functional, focused, self-directed and intensive motor skill treatment.
  • BIOMETRICS: Additionally, the department is equipped with Biometrics upper extremity device that exercise fine motor skills

Department of Speech Therapy
Speech therapy is the science which focuses on the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with communication - speech, speech, voice and swallowing disorders. At DIAPLASI Medical Rehabilitation Hospital, patients who have had a stroke or suffer from neurogenic diseases, traumatic brain injuries, congenital or acquired syndromes, have undergone laryngectomy, tracheotomy, etc. are integrated into the speech therapy program.

Computer-aided speech therapy
At our center we implement modern speech therapy methods with the assistance of a computer, the latest speech therapy software as well as the Visi-Pitch ΙV (U.S.A.) system, the latest version of the most widely used clinical instrumentation tool for speech-language pathologists in America and abroad for the evaluation and the rehabilitation of patient disorders requiring Speech therapy intervention. Disorders that are treated:

Communication - speech disorders (aphasia, apraxia, slurred speech).
The patient is unable to express or understand the spoken or written word. Cognitive, memory, attention, concentration, problem solving, orientation in space and time disorders usually coexist.

Speech disorders - Flow (dysarthria, stuttering).
There is impaired breathing, articulation, resonance, prosody, or speech flow. Voice Disorders (dysphonia, aphonia). Voice disorders are observed in terms of intensity, duration and voice quality.

Chewing - swallowing disorders (dysphagia).
There is a difficulty in chewing and swallowing of solids and/or liquids in the pre-preparative phase (1), oral phase (2) and/or pharyngeal phase (3) of swallowing. Serious difficulties are created in terms of the patient's eating and drinking safety.

Department of Psychological Support
The patient with stroke, spinal cord injuries or other serious conditions that cause motor weakness, functional difficulty with similar psychological burden, needs immediate intensive psychological support, which is almost never done because they are overwhelmed by their medical problem. In the Department of Psychological Support, the psychologist evaluates the patients' current mental state - behavior, emotion, cognitive functions - and the personality and provides ongoing support to the patients and their families, respectively. Additionally, the psychologist acts as an interface and supports the Diaplasis Medical Rehabilitation Hospital personnel.

  • He/she informs the patient and his/her family of their rights and the coverage by the insurance carrier. The social worker interconnects the patient with other services and ensure the patient's smooth reintegration into society.

Department of Dietetics and Nutrition
The World Health Organization (WHO 2000) described the imbalances of the metabolic fuel, which lead to morbid obesity (MO), as one of the most obvious public health problem that affects both developed and developing countries. MO has taken epidemic proportions, with over 1 million adults having their weight above normal. MO as well as being overweight is a known risk factor for a large range of people such as those with uric arthritis, hypertension, hyperlipidemia type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, gall bladder stones, kidney stones, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, breathing difficulties, gastroesophageal and intestinal problems, infertility, complications during pregnancy as well as psychological disorders and some types of cancer. The effects of MO also extend to psychosocial factors. The MO rationale is multifaceted. Genetic and environmental factors may induce the energy balance. Children of obese parents have greater chances of becoming obese themselves in relation to children of non-obese parents. Genes affect many factors that are related both the energy intake and energy output. An energy imbalance (increase of energy intake in relation to energy output) results in the increase of stored fat and obesity. In relation to the above, the Scientific Team of the Modern Biometric Screening Centers "Health Mappers" and "Karyotopos" in collaboration with DIAPLASIS Medical Rehabilitation Hospital, map all of the factors that are globally considered, both for recording the imbalance of the metabolic fuel and its regulation. Worldly scientific personnel comprising of University Professors in the field of Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Health Sciences, in cooperation with Researchers from the Psychology, Biophysics, Molecular Nutrition, Dietetics field, collaborate after having developed comprehensive expertise over their 20year research and collaboration with public and private agencies and offer a final solution against the MO syndrome, relieving the respective patient of health problems that this causes and the Metabolic Syndrome. The above focuses on personalized nutrition therapy programs that are based on biofunctional food or foodstuffs as well as programs concerning the restoration of the metabolic function such as aerobic exercise. The scientific team is coordinated by the G. Leon, who specializes in metabolic physics and nutritional biochemistry issues.

Department of Diagnostic Units
