Information for proti island :

Proti is a beautiful little island right across Marathopoli, Messinia. Just a mile away from the coast, this place is arid and uninhabited yet a very interesting point since ancient times.
The island's name derives from the sea god Proteus, son of Poseidon and has great archeological importance. Citadel ruins, with circular turret wall, still remain at this place dated among the Myceanean and the preclassical period.
At the area called Grammeno (that means "written"), about 30 engraved inscriptions are placed from different periods (post-classical, Roman and Byzantine). These inscriptions express wishes of sailors, who resorted with their ships in the bay of this island in order to be saved from the heavy sea. Before leaving, they would leave wishes to the gods, requesting a good rest of their journey.
On this island there is also a temple dedicated to godess Artemis "Efplias". Nowadays, a church dedicated to Virgin Mary has been rebuilt on the ancient temple's ruins.
In the heyday of piracy, Proti island was used as a base from privateer Katoulias as well as the historic Battleship "Spetses" found a shelter there, back in 1899, when a storm broke out at the Ionian Sea.
